“A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops.” This quote from Henry Adams in his autobiography, The Education of Henry Adams, made me realize that some people have an impact on us that lasts a lifetime. And they are the teachers who inspire, guide, and encourage us to be the best versions of ourselves. Many of these were teachers at my beloved alma mater, Saint Philomene of Alcala Inc. Years have passed since I walked the hallways of that institution, and the lessons I’ve learned there stayed with me, shaping my values, career, and outlook on life.
When I ponder, I always think of the educators who changed my life. The first thing that comes to my mind isn’t only the information, lessons, or knowledge they imparted. It is how they made me feel. They gave me a safe place to grow, celebrated small victories, and saw potential in my weaknesses. They were not just teachers. They were mentors, counselors, and, at times, parents who cheered when I needed them most.

Many thought that education was just about academics, but one of my realizations was that it is more than that. It is not just about the number written on the class records. It’s about character, resilience, and empathy. My teachers led by example, showing kindness and patience even on the most challenging days. They emphasized the importance of integrity and doing the right thing even when no one was watching. Those lessons have become a part of who I am today.
My love of learning is the fruit of the passion these mentors brought to their classrooms. Whether making history come alive through storytelling, turning science experiments into exciting adventures, or challenging us to think critically in literature discussions, they made every subject feel interesting and fun.

They lit the fire of curiosity in me that continues to burn brightly to this day. There were moments when I struggled, times when I thought there was nothing I could do to turn things around. But during those times, they offered me encouragement and practical advice. They taught me how to approach problems systematically, how to break down big tasks into manageable steps, and, most importantly, how to believe in myself.
What makes a great teacher isn’t just their expertise or ability to communicate concepts and deliver lessons. It’s their genuine care for their students as individuals. At my alma mater, I felt seen and valued, not just as a student but as a person. That kind of genuine care is powerful, especially for young people finding their way in the world.

As an adult, I find myself drawing on the lessons I’ve learned from those incredible educators. Their influence has shaped how I approach challenges, treat others, and view the world. They didn’t just prepare me for tests. They prepared me for life.
Thank you to the teachers who go above and beyond every day and invest their time and hearts into their work. Thank you for believing in your students even when they don’t believe in themselves. Thank you for the countless hours you spend planning, grading, and mentoring, often without the recognition you deserve.

To anyone reading this who might be a teacher, know that what you do matters. You have the power to change lives in ways you may never fully realize. And to the mentors of my beloved alma mater, Saint Philomene of Alcala Inc., wherever you may be, know that your impact is lasting and inspiring. I am who I am today because of you.
